Ah, February… the month home to Valentine’s Day, the most romantic day of the year. A day celebrated with filled chocolates, teddy bears, love notes and heart-shaped candies. February is also American Heart Month, which goes hand-in-hand with such a heart-centric holiday. The goal of American Heart Month is to raise awareness for the prevention of heart disease, the #1 killer of men and women.

Heart disease can refer to several different heart conditions, including heart attack and sudden cardiac arrest. Heart attacks occur when there is a blockage of one or more arteries of the heart, and a sudden cardiac arrest is the result of an electrical glitch of the system to the heart, causing irregular heart beats. While heart attacks occur more commonly in older patients, a sudden cardiac arrest can happen to anyone, and often, with little warning.
